The unemployment rate for the Gainesville metro area inched upward in September.
Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler the one-county metro area also saw monthly decreases in employment and jobs from August to September.
"Although we saw some negative metrics in certain MSAs, a majority of the areas saw increases in jobs, employed residents, and labor force," said Butler in the Thursday morning report. “We really need to push the tens of thousands of jobs that we have on our online job listing page EmployGeorgia.com. The more we fill these jobs the more our state can regulate and show positive numbers throughout all MSAs.”
In Gainesville, the unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points in September, reaching 4%. A year ago, the rate was 2.4%.
The labor force decreased in September by one and ended the month with 96,499. That number is down 6,003 when compared to September of 2019.
Gainesville finished the month with 92,628 employed residents. That number decreased by 72 over the month but is down by 7,384 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Gainesville ended September with 90,100. jobs. That number decreased by 200 from August to September but was down by 3,800 when compared to this time last year.
The number of unemployment claims went down by 9% in Gainesville. When compared to last September, claims were up by about 1,315 percent.
Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 1,537 active job postings in metro Gainesville for September.
