Area players holding their own among state yardage leaders at halfway point

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

We are at the halfway point of the 2020 season and several northeast Georgia players are still among the state's yardage leaders in rushing, passing, and receiving.

Flowery Branch junior David Renard still leads the state, and Class 4A, in passing with 1,290 yards. He leads Prince Avenue senior and Georgia-commit Brock Vandagriff by just 16 yards (1,274). Meanwhile, East Hall’s Clete Cooper dropped to fifth overall but is still second in Class 4A with 1,195 yards, and Dasson County’s Zach Holtzclaw still tops Class 3A with 975 yards and is 13th overall in all classifications.

To show how much things change in a week, last week six of the top 21 passers, all classifications, were from the northeast Georgia area. Now, just those three remain among the top 35. J. Ben Haynes of White County has 739 yards now sits 36th,; West Hall’s Clayton Jenkins is in 39th with 727 yards; and Gunner Stockton of Rabun County is 40th with 719 yards, but all three had the week off last week.

To go with all the high-powered passing attacks, it follows suit that the area also has a pair of top 10 guys in receiving. East Hall’s Macere Walker took over the Class 4A receiving lead from the Falcons’ Connor Larson and still remains in that spot. Walker sits seventh overall with 469 yards and Larson is in ninth ninth overall in the state and second in Class 4A with 465 yards. The Vikings' Mon Tabor is 19th with 396 yards. West Hall’s Rodrigo Lopez was leading Class 3A last week and sat 16th overall. But with the Spartans off he dropped to 33rd with 348 yards.

And in the rushing stats, Town’s County's Kyle Oakes climbed to third in the state, all classifications, last week but dropped to fourth despite a 181-yard effort against Laeview Academy. Oakes still leads Class A Public with 811 yards and is only 64 yards behind the state's leader, Jessie Phelps of Rutland. Habersham Central’s Joshua Pickett climbed to 13th in the state and second in Class 6A with 619 yards. Pickett's teammate, Jackson Clouatre, who led the state after four weeks, is 19th with 602 yards.

Just how important is the first region game?
After Regions 6-7A and 8-5A got their region schedules under way last week for northeast Georgia area teams, Regions 7-3A, 8-4A, and 8-6A will join them this week as their quest for playoff berths begins. Does the first region game set the tone for teams and regions as a whole, good and/or bad?
