Girls basketball: Rabun, Dawson, White, Buford get region wins; JHS notches 1st-ever 8-5A win; roundup

TIGER — Rabun County kept pace with Putnam County atop the Region 8-2A standings with an impressive 72-39 win over Union County Friday night.

The Lady Wildcats (20-1, 10-1 Region 8-2A) used a huge first half to take control en route to their fourth straight victory. They led just 15-9 after the first quarter but outscored the Lady Panthers (17-5, 8-3 Region 8-2A) 24-12 in the second quarter for a 39-21 halftime lead.

Carley Haban paced Rabun County with 22 points. Laken Stiles added  10 points and 5 assists and Gracie Deetz had 11 points for the Lady Wildcats. Natalie Nix had 8 points and 5 steals for Rabun County.


JOHNSON 43,
WALNUT GROVE 34

Johnson snapped a 16-game losing streak and notched its first-ever Region 8-5A win, ending a 42-game losing streak in region play Friday night.

The Lady Knights (2-20, 1-7 Region 8-5A) jumped out to a 10-5 lead and took a 17-16 lead into halftime. They blew the game open with a 15-6 third-quarter spurt and held on in the fourth quarter for the victory.

Jasmyn Gooch and Tytiana Teasley led the charge scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively, to lead Johnson. They combined for 17 points in the second half to help keep Walnut Grove at bay.

Amy Berry and Ashley Mintz each had 6 points for the Lady Knights.


DAWSON COUNTY 63,
LUMPKIN COUNTY 55

The Lady Tigers completed the season sweep over the Lady Indians Friday night at home.

It was a tight affair the entire way. Dawson County (13-9, 6-4 Region 7-3A) led 12-10 after the first quarter and took a 29-26 lead into halftime.

Lumpkin County (14-9, 5-6 Region 7-3A) trimmed the lead to 44-42 heading into the fourth quarter where the Lady Tigers pulled away in the final minute.

Marlie Townley led Dawson County with 16 points. Maddie Anglin had 15 points, Sophia D'Oliveira scored 14 points, Kirklyn Porter had 10, and Bella Henson scored 8 points for the Lady Tigers.


WHITE COUNTY 42,
CHESTATEE 40

The Lady Warriors held off a furious second-half charge by Chestatee to earn a Region 7-4A win Friday night in Cleveland.

The win for White County (16-7, 8-2 Region 7-4A) coupled with Flowery Branch’s loss to Marist, moved the Lady Warriors back into second place in the region.

Chestatee (13-11, 5-6 Region 7-4A) trailed by three at the half and by as many as six in the fourth quarter. But the Lady War Eagles rallied to tie the game before falling in the final moments.

Maggie McNair had 16 points to lead White County. Emma Easterwood and Logan Wiggins each had 11 points for the Lady War Eagles.


GREATER ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 48,
CHEROKEE BLUFF 41

Madi Phillips pulled down her 500th career rebound and the Lady Bears pushed the third-ranked Lady Spartans down the wire in a Region 7-3A contest.

Phillips finished with 12 pts and 15 rebounds against GAC while Timber Gaither had 14 points for the Lady Bears.


LANIER CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 51,
PEACHTREE ACADEMY 30

The Lady Lightning held Peachtree Academy to just 12 second-half points in taking a win on the road Friday night.

LCA (13-3) led 21-14 after the first quarter and 27-18 at halftime. The Lady Lightning blew the game open outscoring Peachtree 24-12 in the second half.

Faith Wasden had 17 points to lead LCA. Reece Montgomery added 13 points and Lexie Robertson 7 points for the Lightning.


BUFORD 57,
CEDAR SHOALS 33

It was another easy region win for the Lady Wolves against Cedar Shoals at the Buford High School Athletic Center.

Tate Walters and Ashyia Willis scored 10 points each to lead Buford, and Tatum Ozment and Sara Viti added 7 each in the win. 

The Lady Wolves were in control at the half, up 35-7. 

Buford (22-0, 8-0 Region 8-5A) will travel to Wesleyan on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m.
