Mount Vernon Mills in Alto shutting down, idling 600

Mount Vernon Mills will close in March, idling some 600 employees on March 9.

The company filed notice with the Georgia Department of Labor in accordance with the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, according to the DOL Business Layoff/Closure Listing.

The company began notifying employees Thursday, according to social media posts by many of those affected.

While the Mount Vernon Mills plants are just inside Banks County, they have a major impact on Habersham County.

Mary Beth Horton, president of the Habersham Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber and other groups will do what they can to help the employees who will be losing their jobs in about 60 days.

"We never like to hear of long-term, large employers like that closing, but the chamber along with the Georgia Department of Labor and Habersham Partnership for Growth will work very closely with those displaced by the layoffs to help find new jobs," Horton said.
