Responders searching for missing boater on Lake Hartwell

By Rob Moore Reporter

Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said an Illinois man is missing on Lake Hartwell and believed to be in the water.

On Wednesday, Jan. 8, about 3 p.m., Cleveland received a phone call from a representative of Hartwell Marina that one of the company’s rented pontoon boats had been found anchored in the lake without anyone onboard.

Cleveland said the boat had been rented by a man from Illinois with no apparent ties to this area.

“At this time, we believe he is in the water,” Cleveland said in a statement.

Search and recovery efforts are underway.

No additional information is available as of Thursday morning.
