The Cleveland City Council Monday night approved a resolution that calls for a special election for Mayor of the City of Cleveland.
The action was prompted by last week's sudden resignation of Shan Ash, who made the announcement just hours before he was to be sworn in for another term in office.
Cleveland Mayor Pro-tem Annie Sutton announced during the meeting that the special election would be held March 24, the same day as Georgia's Presidential Primary, at the polling location at Cleveland First Baptist Church.
Sutton said the qualifying fee for the position is $138, and qualifying would be held January 27 through 29 at Cleveland City Hall. Qualifying hours will be 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 - 4:30 p.m. on the three days of the qualifying period.
None of the current council members indicated Monday they would seek the mayor's position. If they do, they would have to resign their position and another special election would have to be set to fill that position.
