Basketball: Dawson sweeps Bluff in 7-3A showdowns

DAWSONVILLE — The Class 3A fifth-ranked Dawson County boys needed a late rally to come away with a thrilling 64-61 win over Cherokee Bluff in a key Region 7-3A showdown Friday night at the Dawson County gym.

The Bears (9-7, 3-2 Region 7-3A) came in looking  to grab a share of the lead in the region standings with a win and led most of the way. Thy held a slim 17-16 lead after the first quarter and took a 36-33 lead into halftime behind the 3-point shooting of Palmer Weaver and Cade Simmons, who knocked down five first half treys and combined for 18 points.

Cherokee Bluff extended the lead to 53-49 heading into the fourth quarter before the Tigers (15-2, 5-0 Region 7-3A) caught fire. The Tigers outscored the Bears 15-8 in the final period behind Campbell Reed and Tate Adkins, who combined for 10 of their 20 total points in the quarter.

The loss dropped Cherokee Bluff into a tie for third place with North Hall. The win for Dawson County kept the Tigers as the only undefeated team in the region.

Mason Barnes paced Dawson County with 15 points but Jason Gibson had a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Reed finished with 12 points and Eli Burress added 9 points for the Tigers.

Weaver led Cherokee Bluff with 15 points but managed just 1 free throw in the crucial fourth quarter. Simmons and Jacob Carlson each had 10 points for the Bears.

The Lady Tigers held Cherokee Bluff to just 13 second half points to pull away for the win in Region 7-3A action.

Dawson County (10-6, 4-1 Region 7-3A) held a slim 35-31 halftime lead after a back-and-forth first 16 minutes with both teams trading the a half-dozen leads. But the Tigers went to a pressure defense to open the second half and stymied the Bears (3-12, 0-5 Region 7-3A) offense the rest of the way.

Mariah Benson paced Dawson County with 22 points. Maddie Anglin had 18 points and Sophia D'Oliveira scored 12 for the Tigers.
