Fire destroys former White County landmark

An overnight fire destroyed a former White County business that holds memories for many people in the area.

The 4,000-square-foot Silver Spur Skating Rink on Roller Rink Road south of Cleveland, being used for storage of commercial equipment, was destroyed in the fire, said White County Fire Services spokeswoman Ana Newberry.

At approximately 2 a.m. Friday, White County Fire units, with automatic aid from the City of Cleveland and Lee Arrendale State Prison fire departments, were called to the reported commercial structure fire at 33 Roller Rink Road.

“According to reports, the structure was over 80% involved when the call was received by our E-9-1-1 center,” Newberry said.  “Upon arrival of the first fire units, the structure was approaching 100% involvement, which made it a defensive fire operation.”

Ten family members who lived in the structure were able to evacuate the building with no injuries, Newberry said. The American Red Cross was called to assist the family.

The structure and eight vehicles were damaged and/or destroyed (five inside per bystanders and three were outside the building), Newberry said.

Firefighters were on scene for a total of six hours.  White County Fire Investigator Jason Davis was called to the scene and the incident is currently under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
