LEXINGTON — Roman Haynes and Chandler each rushed for a pair of touchdowns and the defense forced three turnovers as Banks County rolled to an impressive 49-14 win over Oglethorpe County Friday night in Region 8-2A action.
But it wasn’t Haynes or Payne that got things going for the Leopards (3-2, 2-0 Region 8-2A). Jace Bennett capped the Leopards opening drive with a 61-yard sprint to the end zone for a 7-0. Haynes would then sandwich his touchdown runs of 4-yards and 18-yards around a Braxton Simpson interception.
Payne scored on a 4-yard run late in the second quarter after a brief lightning delay for a 28-0 lead. The Patriots (1-4, 0-2) got on the board late in the second quarter to trail 28-7 at halftime.
The two teams traded turnovers to start the third quarter and the score stayed that way until Payne added his second TD, a 2-yard run, less than a minute into the fourth quarter. After the Banks County defense forced another punt, Sawyer Pace scored on a 40-yard punt return just a minute later for a 42-7 lead.
Following a Carter Stroud interception, Bryson Cheek scored on a 1-yard run to cap a short 20-yard drive to push the lead to 49-7.
Oglethorpe County added a late score for the final points.
Banks County will travel to Rabun County next week.
