DANIELSVILLE — East Jackson's best start in 10 years was halted by Madison County Friday night in a 35-7 loss on the road.
The Eagles (3-1) defense, which had allowed just 29 points coming in, could not stop the Red Raiders (3-2) ground game. Madison County pounded out over 300 yards rushing with three players -- Colby Smith (102 yards), Dayton Gresham (112 yards), and Martavian Cooper (95 yards) -- doing most of the damage.
Madison County never trailed and used a pair of touchdowns in a 12-second span late in the first quarter to take control. Cooper scored on a 13-yard run and the Gresham added another 13-yard TD run following an interception for a 14-0 lead. It stayed that way until the fourth quarter.
Smith scored on a 7-yard run on the first play of the fourth and Dayton Gresham added a 24-yard run four minutes later to push the lead to 28-0. The Eagles only score came late in the game when Caleb Adair found Nino Brown for a 7-yard touchdown pass.
Brown finished with 61 yards on 22 carries and the one touchdown catch to lead East Jackson.
