Clayton man arrested on attempted murder, arson charges

A Rabun County man has been charged with felony arson and attempted murder after intentionally setting fire to a camper while a victim was still inside.

According to the Georgia Office of Insurance and Fire Safety, Al L. Lococo Jr, 35, was arrested on Wednesday, September 11 and faces additional charges of aggravated battery, probation violation and false imprisonment. The charges stem from his alleged involvement in the fire that occurred around 8:10 p.m. the night of September 4 in Rabun Gap off HWY 441 North.

Investigators revealed that the fire was set inside the camper following a domestic dispute between Lococo and an unnamed victim — both Lococo and the victim were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained from the blaze.

The victim, however, remains at Grady Memorial Hospital as of Monday, September 16 for further treatment of more serious injuries.

“Not only did Lococo commit arson, but he also put the life of another individual in jeopardy,” said Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King. “There is no place for horrific acts of this nature. My office will continue working closely with local authorities to ensure Lococo is punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to Georgia Law, First Degree Arson is a felony punishable by a fine of no more than $50,000 or by a prison term between one and twenty years, or both.

Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols said if anyone is struggling with a domestic violence situation, then to call local authorities or family violence agencies for help.

"If there are people out there that have been or are in situations like this, please contact your local law enforcement or family advocates such as FAITH (Fight Abuse In The Home), who provide(s) a lot of services to victims of family violence," Nichols said. "Don't let it get to this level before reaching out for help."

As of Monday, September 16, Lococo remains in the Rabun County jail; more charges are expected to be brought forth.

Investigators with the Safety Fire Commissioner’s Office are assisting the Rabun County Fire Department and the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office with this investigation.
