Gainesville: String of 90-degree days broken Saturday

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

There was a break Saturday in the string of 90-degree days that has been baking Gainesville and other parts of northeast Georgia, though it remained unseasonably warm.

The temperature topped out at 86.  That compares to the low- to mid-90s experienced since earlier this month. five to ten degrees above normal.  Similar readings were recorded Saturday elsewhere in the area.

In Gainesville, you have to go back to Sept. 2 when the high was 89 to find a day when the temperature didn't break into the 90s.  The highest reading recorded during that period was 95, which occurred on Sept. 9 and Sept. 12.

But, the National Weather Service, which is predicting a high o 88 in Gainesville Sunday, says the 90s will return Monday and Tuesday before temperatures drop back into the 80s starting Wednesday and continuing into next weekend.  And, there's no rain in the forecast next week until Wednesday when there's only a slight chance of a thundershower.

As AccessWDUN reported Thursday, the higher-than-normal temperatures and dry weather that have plagued north Georgia have created drought conditions once again in parts of northeast Georgia.
