Evening thunderstorm damages homes, knocks out power to Jefferson

Several trees fell on houses and one fell on Heritage Heights Apartments in Jackson County just after 7 p.m. Tuesday.

“This evening around 7:10 p.m., we had a thunderstorm come through Jackson County that caused significant damage to the downtown Jefferson area,” Jackson County Emergency Management Agency Director Bryan Bullock said. “As I am typing this email, the power is out in the downtown Jefferson area.”

In Jefferson, the following streets are closed: Hoschton Street, Dragon Drive and Fairlane Drive, according to Bullock.

Jefferson Fire Department and Jefferson Street Department have worked to get streets reopened.

Georgia Power Co. and Jackson EMC are working to restore power.

Jackson County EMA has halted operations and will resume damage assessment Wednesday morning.
