Habersham holding District 5 County Commission Special Election Nov. 5

CLARKESVILLE – Habersham County Commissioner Ed Nichols has sold his house and will be moving out of District 5, so he has resigned his seat.

A Special Election, coinciding with the Nov. 5 countywide jail bond referendum, will be held to fill Nichols’ seat for the balance of his term, roughly one year, one month and 13 days, said Habersham County Elections Superintendent Laurel Ellison.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as a Habersham County Commissioner,” Nichols’ resignation letter states. “I wish the very best in the future for all county employees and elected officials.”

Qualifying for the District 5 Special Election will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Sept. 16-19 with a one-hour lunch period, and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 20. Those qualifying must live inside District 5.

Qualifying fee is $288, the same as the amount set for the 2018 county commission seats, Ellison said. Candidates must have lived in District 5 for at least one year prior to the Nov. 5 Special Election.

Qualifying will be held at the Habersham County Office of Elections and Registration, Habersham County Administration Building, 130 Jacob’s Way, Suite 101, Clarkesville.

The last day to register to vote in the 2019 Special Election is Oct. 7.

Absentee ballots and early voting will begin on Oct. 15 and continue until Nov. 1, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., in the Office of Elections and Registration.

Advance voting at the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center and First Baptist Church of Cornelia will begin Oct. 28 and continue until Nov. 1, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All Habersham County voting precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5.
