Dogs finish 4th at The Carmel Cup; Ralston takes 8th

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The Georgia men’s golf team shot an 11-under 349 on Sunday in the final round of The Carmel Cup and finished in fourth place in the season-opening event.

Playing the Pebble Beach Golf Links’ par-72, 6,828-yard layout, the Bulldogs wound up at 17-under 1,063 for the tournament. Georgia’s 349 on Sunday was its best round of the event. Texas Tech won the tournament at 35-under 1,045, followed by Oklahoma at 29-under 1,051, and Arkansas at 28-under 1,052.

Sophomore Trent Phillips paced the Bulldogs on Sunday as he signed for a 6-under 66. That is his 28th par-or-better round in 38 collegiate loops. Senior Will Chandler followed at 3-under 69, senior Spencer Ralston had a 2-under 70, junior Davis Thompson notched a 1-under 71, and senior Trevor Phillips landed at 1-over 73. Senior Calum Masters had the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 3-over 75.

Trent Phillips came in third individually at 11-under 205, three back of medalist Sandy Scott of Texas Tech (14-under 202). Phillips now has eight top-10 finishes in 13 collegiate starts. Ralston and Thompson placed eighth at 7-under 209. Masters finished at 3-over 219, followed by Chandler at 8-over 224, and Trevor Phillips at 11-over 227.

“We showed improvement every round, and that is a point of pride,” Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. “We are coming out of the weekend with plenty of positives to build on as we move forward. We’ll get back home to work on the little things and get ready for the next one.”

Georgia will play in the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in Louisiana Sept. 15-17.

Georgia entered the year No. 7 in Golfweek’s Division I Men’s Preseason Rankings, No. 9 on GolfChannel.com, and No. 13 in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll.
