A Gainesville man who is accused of putting his dead baby's body in a freezer was found dead in his jail cell in Alabama Friday, according to local media reports.

The Dothan Eagle reported Saturday that Houston County, Alabama authorities found 28-year-old Carlton James Mathis dead at 9:45 p.m. Friday. Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza said the cause of Mathis' death has not been released.

"Right now information in this death is limited, but the death is being investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency," Valenza told the Dothan Eagle.

Mathis was charged with murder after being arrested in Florida in 2018 along with the baby's mother, Amanda Gail Oakes of Murrayville.

Oakes pled guilty earlier in the week to charges of manslaughter and abuse of a corpse. She was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

The charges stem from Oakes' child, six-month-old Curtis James Oakes, being found dead in a freezer in a motel room the couple had previously occupied in Dothan, Alabama.

Mathis was scheduled for trial in November.
