Elite Scholars Academy in Clayton County may have violated a district policy regarding exercise in extreme heat conditions following the death of a student.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported 16-year-old Imani Bell died outside Aug. 13 after running stairs during basketball drills. Bell allegedly complained to a coach that she wasn't feeling well during the drills.
According to the AJC, a district policy titled "Heat advisory precautions for physical education/school day activities," requires all outdoor activities to be suspended if the heat index reaches 95 degrees or more. A heat index at 95-100 degrees are noted as high risk, while a heat index of 101 or more are considered extreme risk.
Temperatures were recorded at 100 degrees the day of the incident.
Justin Miller, Bell's family's attorney and spokesman, said the family is considering a lawsuit against Clayton County Schools. The family wants to know more about the coaching staff and why students were doing conditioning drills outside.
The school district has not been forthcoming with information, the AJC said.
