Football: Flowery Branch's Elijah Gainey out for the season

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons' senior quarterback Elijah Gainey has a torn ACL, according to his Twitter page.

Gainey said he tore his ACL during a scrimmage last week against Dacula, a 29-19 loss, via Twitter.

"One thing I know is that God is in control in this moment," Gainey posted on his Twitter account. "His plan is perfect and even though it's hard to understand, at times, I know I need to have faith in Him through this. This new chapter is going to be long and tough, but without God, I wouldn't be able to get through any of this."

Branch coach Ben Hall said Sunday evening that it is "an unfortunate situation."

"Our hearts ache for Elijah Gainey," he said. "He is an important member of our team and will serve as a student coach for the 2019 season. We have a very resilient group of kids, and they are responding in a positive manner."

Hall said sophomore QB David Renard will take the reins of the offense.

"David gained significant varsity action during the second half of the season in 2018," Hall said. "While we hurt for Elijah, we are excited to see David grow."

Gainey remains verbally committed to play college football for South Alabama. He helped lead the Falcons to an 8-3 mark and a playoff berth last season. The Falcons are expected to be in the hunt for a Region 7-4A title.
