Former Bowman mayor, principal, pastor to be remembered

A well-known Northeast Georgia principal, pastor and former mayor of Bowman died Sunday, Aug. 4.

The Rev. James F. Creason Sr., 89, of Bowman formerly served as principal of Canon Elementary School and Bowman Elementary School and served as a one-term mayor of Bowman.

The City of Bowman released a statement on the loss of its former mayor.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rev. James Creason,” the statement reads. “During his many years as principal of Bowman Elementary School, local pastor and mayor, Mr. Creason touched more lives of Bowman residents than possibly anyone else ever has. His contributions to our community could never be expressed in words. Bowman would not be the place it is today without Mr. Creason.”

During his term as mayor of Bowman, Creason worked to establish both Bowman City Park and Bowman Medical Center.

Creason served his country in the U.S. Army. He earned both a master’s and specialist degree in education from the University of Georgia, as well as a bachelor’s degree in religion from Bob Jones University.

Creason had served as a missionary in Ethiopia and as a bi-vocational pastor at Community Baptist, Shiloh Baptist and Oak Grove Baptist, all in Madison County; and at Pleasant Grove Baptist in Bowman.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Dewy Rose Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Gardens-South in Royston with military honors by the U.S. Army.

The family will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home in Elberton from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Memorials may be made to Canon Baptist Church Recreation Fund, P.O. Box 306, Canon, GA 30520.
