Local club soccer team wins National Cup

The 16-and-under United Futbol Academy girls soccer team beat Hawaii Rush-Maui, 3-1, to win the US Club National Cup XVIII Championship last week.

The team plays out of Cumming and has several area soccer players on the team, including Lakeview Academy's Mildred Filson and Gainesville High's Whitney Filson.

The tournament is classified as one of the most prestigious soccer events in the nation. The National Cup XVII featured more than 5,000 players from 250 teams across 30 states and is the pinnacle event of a club-based competition among nationwide qualifiers.

United Futbol Academy was undefeated throughout the tournament, scoring 13 total goals.   

UFA beat Salvo, SC, 3-2, PDA Surf, 1-0 and Challenge Red, 6-0.
