Gainesville notables to take part in women empowering play

By Scott Kimbler
On August 10, well known Gainesville attorney Lydia Sartain and former Hall County Commissioner Deborah Mack will join nine other women on stage at Pearce Auditorium for Gainesville's first complete showing of the Vagina Monologues.

Producer Nairika Cornett said the play is to promote the empowerment of women and to face some tough social issues.

"When we do not talk about serious issues, they only feed on themselves and become even bigger issues and that is what this play really delves in to," Cornett said. "It is a daily fight for woman to find a voice, to find a belonging, to find a respect in everyday society."

Cornett said Brenau University donated the use of Pearce Auditorium for the presentation and all proceeds will go to support Rape Response and Alliance for Literacy and other non-profits.

Along with Sartain, Mack and Cornett, the cast includes LeTrell Simpson,  Ginny Early, Mary Stanford, Jill Mansfield, Haley Bowers and others.

Cornett said when she first proposed Vagina Monologues to women in Gainesville, she received only positive feedback with many wanting to be a part of the presentation. She added the list of players grew very fast.

The play was written by  Eve Ensler, who was the victim of sexual abuse and came from her own struggle with expression of the topic. Vagina Monologues premiered in 1996 and has been a hit ever since. It has been translated into several languages and performed in 140 countries .

Ticket are $50 and includes a pre performance reception at Pearce Auditorium at Brenau University. For more information click here
