If all goes as planned, the Hall County School District will soon have some additional property in its inventory on White Sulphur Road in the East Hall area.
School board members Monday night approved a contract to purchase a 30-acre tract at 2696 White Sulphur Road for a potential school site. Following the board vote, Superintendent Will Schofield said district officials had been looking for land in that area for the last couple of years, knowing that growth was happening along the Georgia 365 corridor.
"[The tract] really sits nicely for a potential elementary school in the future," Schofield said. "We do not currently have property in that corridor and we know that there's tremendous growth coming."
Schofield said the price tag on the tract is $50,000 per acre.
"That's significantly less than a lot of the land that's sold around that [area], but we're also in a position to give some letters of donation, so as a public school system we sit in a unique situation," Schofield said.
Between now and August 30, when the contract would be finalized, district engineers will more closely assess the property and report their findings to the state.
Schofield said the board has the option to terminate the contract for any reason during that 39-day inspection period.
