Plan to change name of Howard Road moves forward

By B.J. Williams
If Gainesville City Council approves a requested name change in August, then there will be no more Howard Road in the city.

The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board Tuesday approved a request to rename the remaining quarter-mile of the road as YMCA Drive.

Georgia Mountains YMCA President and CEO Amy Kienle made the formal request at the meeting.

"The monument sign that this board approved in 2016 has certainly helped raise awareness and visibility of our location and we hope this road name change will have that same effect," said Kienle. "We are the only property that's effected by this name change."

No one spoke in opposition to the request.

Board members approved the request unanimously.

The other section of the road - to the east of Ga. 365 - was renamed as Lanier Tech Drive in 2017.

Gainesville City Council takes up the request on August 6.
