GSP, Habersham coroner’s office probing death of man found in car

CLARKESVILLE – The cause of death for a man found dead in a vehicle north of Clarkesville Saturday afternoon will be determined by an autopsy at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab in Decatur.

Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa were notified of a crash involving a white 1994 Dodge Shadow on Ben Jones Road in Habersham County.

“The vehicle was traveling south along a private drive traveling toward Ben Jones Road,” said Sgt. Casey Coffee of GSP Post 7. “The vehicle struck a mailbox at the intersection of the private drive and Ben Jones Road. Then vehicle then crossed over Ben Jones Road to the address of 1768 Ben Jones Road. The vehicle struck a utility pole with its driver’s side mirror.”

The incident was not witnessed, so it was not reported until discovered.

“After driving through the yard at 1768 Ben Jones Road, the vehicle crossed back over Ben Jones Road to the private drive,” Coffee said. “The vehicle then traveled off the east side of the private drive, striking several small trees. The vehicle came to rest after striking the small trees. The vehicle received minor damage from the collisions.”

Release of the driver’s identity is pending notification of next of kin.

“The exact date and time of the crash are unknown,” Coffee said.
