United hopes to put out Fire in Chicago

ATLANTA — Atlanta United returns to action Wednesday when it travels to face Chicago Fire at SeatGeek Stadium.

Atlanta enters Wednesday’s match in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings and second in points per game while Chicago sits in 10th. The club is 4-1-0 all-time versus Chicago and won the first meeting this season 2-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on June 1 behind a brace from Josef Martinez. The Venezuelan striker leads Atlanta with five goals scored against the Fire. Atlanta is 3-5-0 on the road this season and has tallied the most away wins in MLS since the start of 2017 (17), two more than the New York Red Bulls.

Atlanta is coming off a 2-1 win against Montreal Impact June 29 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Justin Meram scored his first goal for Atlanta with a long-range strike in the first half and later added the game-winner in the 83rd minute as won its sixth consecutive home match.

Chicago fell 3-1 to New York Red Bulls on the road Friday June 28 to run its winless streak to six games. The Fire remain the only team in MLS without an away win in 2019, however, they have only lost once at SeatGeek Stadium this season where they are 4-1-4. C.J. Sapong and Nemanja Nikolic lead Chicago with six goals each.
