Benfield sweeps Limited Late Model features at Toccoa

By Charles Head

Drew Benfield doubled up on trips to victory lane at Georgia’s Toccoa Raceway on Saturday night.

The Toccoa, Georgia native swept a pair of features for the Phillips Group Limited Late Models, as the division was one of three that ran make-up events after their portion of last week’s race was rained out.

In the first feature, Benfield started on the outside of the front row beside David McCoy, and used a bold move on the high side to power to the lead on the opening lap. From there, Benfield went on to record his first move since moving to the division. McCoy held on to finish in second, with Danny Ledford in third.

Benfield started on the front row again in the second feature, but saw McCoy drive to the lead early on. McCoy held the point for most of the event, but suffered a mechanical problem with just a few laps remaining. That moved Benfield to the lead, and he went on to take his second win of the night. Ledford finished in second, followed by Wesley English in third.

In the Midsouth Cage Equipment 604 Pro Late Model feature, David McCoy outlasted the field in an attrition filled race. Nick Schlager came home in second, followed by Ricky Smith in third.

The Safety Plus 602 Sportsman division race was led wire-to-wire by Crandall Turner en route to his fourth win of the season. Matthew Ferguson finished in second with John Howard in third.

Billy Buffington claimed his third Modified Street win in a row with Tracy Addison and Daniel Snow rounding out the podium.

In the Toccoa Pro Trucks, Chris Nickerson took a brand new truck to victory lane. Terry Calhoun finished second, with Bill Pulliam third.

The Monster Mini Stock Association returned to Toccoa Raceway for the first time in four years, with Harley Holden being flagged the winner. However, his carburetor was found to not meet series specifications and he was disqualified. That handed the official win to Matt Gilbert. Jackie Holden was elevated to second place, with Jamie Mattison in third.

In the second feature for the Stock 4 cylinder division, Jackie Holden took the win, with his brother Harley Holden in second and Randy Boshears in third.

The Stock 8 Cylinder division had two races as well. Hayden Collett won the first of the two, with Bradlee Jones and Brady Hunt rounding out the podium.

In the second Stock 8 feature, Jones went to victory lane followed by Brady Hunt and Hayden Collett.

In the 602 Young Guns, Logan Carlyle got his first win as he topped fellow competitor J.T. Turner.

Toccoa Raceway returns to action with a special mid-week show, as the track will celebrate Independence Day with a July 3 event. Visit ToccoaRaceway.com for more information.
