Union County couple accused of attempting to exchange vehicle for child

A Blue Ridge couple is facing charges of attempting to purchase a child for adoption.

"Actually the couple was trying to persuade the mother to sign over her rights for the consideration of a vehicle," said Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles

Miles said William and Rebecca McClain were already caring for the child and were hoping to adopt.

Miles said Rebecca McClain had come into contact with the child and mother through her work at Union County DFACS.

The two are charged with unlawful inducement for adoption. The 10-month-old child has been placed in the care of DFACS.

Miles said the GBI is preparing a case to turn over the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office.
