Departing physicians form heart institute at Northside

The 12 physicians who left Northeast Georgia Medical Center over the weekend have formed the Northside Cardiovascular Institute, Northside Hospital announced Thursday.

For now, the hospital said the physicians will see patients at the Northside Medical Midtown building on West Peachtree Street in Atlanta. Other office locations will follow, the hospital said.

Dr. Jeffrey Marshall, one of the 12 doctors, has been named the leader of the Northside Cardiovascular Institute.

“On behalf of my colleagues, we are grateful for the opportunities we’ve had and the relationships we’ve developed,” Marshall said. “As we discussed how to best continue the growth of our comprehensive cardiovascular program, we knew that Northside Hospital shared this vision and was the perfect partner for continued growth.”

Marshall said the group of physicians is responsible for creating one of the nation’s top cardiovascular programs and one consistently top-ranked in Georgia.

An attorney for the physicians notified NGMC on Saturday they would not be renewing their employment agreements. The departures represented nearly a third of the physicians on staff at The Heart Center.

But a hospital official said Monday that operations would continue normally.

Northside initially did not confirm that the doctors were moving to their facilities. On Tuesday, in a one-sentence statement, the hospital welcomed the physicians, but did not name them.

The creation of the new unit will allow Northside Hospital to expand its expertise in care and treatment and offer patients more options, Skip Putnam, Northside’s vice president of administration, said.

“The addition of this team has significant meaning for patients and their families,” Putnam said. “As one of Georgia’s strongest health care systems, Northside consistently works toward better access to care and the best possible resources. The Northside Cardiovascular Institute reflects those goals, with world-class physicians and a commitment to extraordinary patient care.”

In addition to Marshall, the other physicians who make up the institute are Dr. Allison Dupont, Dr. Brenda Hott, Dr. Christopher Leach, Dr. Mark Leimbach, Dr. Mark Matthews, Dr. Kashyap Patel, Dr. Mehrdad Toosi, Dr. Pradyumna Tummala, Dr. Steven Wang, Dr. Heather Westmoreland and Dr. Andrew Yen.

Existing patients of these doctors who have questions regarding appointments or procedures already scheduled are asked to contact The Heart Center of Northeast Georgia Medical Center at 770-534-2020. Patients can also call Northside Cardiovascular Institute at 404-962-6000 with any questions.

The hospital said more details about the practice will be announced soon.
