Buford deaths ruled murder-suicide

By AccessWDUN Staff

The deaths of a man and woman at a Buford apartment complex have been ruled a case of murder-suicide.

The Gwinnett County Police Department identified the victim in the incident as Lachica Ringwood, 39; the shooter was identified as her boyfriend Jamaya Morris, 40. Ringwood and Morris lived together at the apartment at Preston Hills at Mill Creek on Buford Drive, according to police.

"Officers from the North Precinct responded to perform a welfare check on Lachica at the request of her family member," said Cpl. Wilbert Rundles in a media statement. "The family member said she had not spoken to Lachica in a couple of days, which was abnormal, and she was concerned for Lachica’s safety."

Rundles said Ringwood and Morris had argued with each other in front of the family, and Morris had made comments that worried family members.

When officers arrived at the scene, they got no answer at the door. An apartment staff member opened the apartment for police.

"Officers found Lachica and Jamaya deceased inside the apartment," Rundles said. "Jamaya was lying on top of Lachica and had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Once his body was removed detectives discovered that Lachica also had a gunshot wound that appeared to be the result of her death."

The bodies were discovered around 3 p.m. Monday, June 3.
