NEW YORK — The Altlanta Braves took Baylor catcher Shea Langeliers with their first pick of the MLB Draft Monday night.
Langeliers is a four-year junior and was considered perhaps the best defensive catcher in Division I in 2019. However, he put on a power display during the Los Angeles Regional. Against Omaha in an elimination game, Langeliers was 5-of-6 with three home runs, a double, and an NCAA-record 11 RBI in the game.
He hit .308 for the Bears with 10 home runs, 9 doubles, and 42 RBI in 2019.
He was injured during the season but came back healthy and in time for the postseason. If not for Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman, who went first overall to the Baltimore Orioles, Langeliers may have been the top catcher and perhaps the No. 1 overall selection.
With the 21st pick the Braves took Texas A&M shortstop Braden Shewmake, a four-yar junior as well that is a left-handed batter. Shewmake hit .313 with 78 hits and 14 doubles for the Agies, all of which led the team. He added 6 home runs, 4 triples, and knocked in 47 runs in 2019.
Th first Georgia player selected was Blessed Trinity High School shortstop CJ Abrams by the San Diego Padres with the sixth overall pick.
