Dogs turn to freshman to keep season alive

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

ATHENS — Hard-throwing freshman Cole Wilcox will be called on by Georgia to keep their season alive Sunday night in a must-win for the Bulldogs in the Athens Regional.

Georgia (46-16) faces elimination against Florida State (38-21) who beat the Bulldogs 12-3 on Saturday. Georgia stayed alive with a 13-0 win over Florida Atlantic in Sunday’s first elimination game.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Foley Field.

Wilcox (3-1, 3.70 ERA, 56.0 IP, 41 H, 33 BB, 63 K) is one of college baseball’s hardest throwers, reaching 100 mph in a game several times during the season. Opponents are batting just .207 against the Chickamauga native.

A Seminoles win would give them the Regional title and a spot in the super regionals next week. They will start sophomore Conor Grady (8-5, 3.96 ERA, 52.1 IP, 42 H, 22 BB, 64 K).

A Georgia win will set up one game, winner-take-all showdown on Monday at 4 p.m. at Foley Field for the regional title.
