Rabid fox attacks woman in Tallulah Falls

By Rob Moore

A rabid fox attacked a woman in the area of Tallulah Point in Tallulah Falls this week, and officials in town are looking for another.

Tallulah Falls Police Chief Tonya Elrod said Saturday the attack happened on Memorial Day and involved a town resident.

A town resident euthanized the fox involved in the attack.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Game Management Division picked up the animal and had it tested, according to Elrod. Those tests confirmed the animal was rabid.

Both the female victim and her husband are undergoing a series of rabies shots following Monday’s attack, Elrod said.

The husband is taking the shots because of marks he received getting the animal off his wife, according to Elrod.

As of Saturday afternoon, officials continue to look for another possible rabid fox in the area.

“It was spotted Saturday morning near the Habersham/Rabun County line,” Elrod said.

Elrod encourages residents and visitors to the town and to Tallulah Gorge State Park to keep their distance from wild animals, especially those acting strangely or in an uncharacteristic manner.

Anyone who observes an animal that appears to be sick or aggressive within the Town of Tallulah Falls or inside the state park should call the Habersham County E-9-1-1 Center’s non-emergency line at (706) 778-3911 and provide dispatchers with the location and last direction of travel of the animal.

Emergency incidents always should be reported by dialing 9-1-1.
