New lanes on Athens Highway to open Tuesday, traffic delays on Monday

By B.J. Williams
For motorists who have been navigating the construction on Athens Highway east of Gainesville, there's some relief coming on Tuesday.

The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to shift drivers to the new lanes of  SR 11/US 129 the morning of Tuesday, June 4. However, on Monday, June 3, traffic will be reduced to a single lane as finishing touches are made to the widened highway.

The single lane closures will be in place between Roy Parks Road and Barrett Road from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., according to GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland.

"This will allow construction partners with Georgia DOT to remove pavement markings and prepare to shift drivers over to the new lanes," Strickland said.

Strickland said the single-lane traffic will likely mean delays in the area. She said flagging operators will be directing traffic to make the process easier for commuters.

The widening of SR/US 129 is a project that began in 2016 and should be complete in spring of 2020.

The widening of SR 11 US 129 is a project that started construction back in 2016 and has a completion date of Spring 2020.

Strickland said the shift on Tuesday is one of the last sections of new asphalt lanes near Eskimo Cold Storage.
