Former State Sen. Michael Williams, who ran unsuccessfully for the GOP gubernatorial nomination last year, has reached a plea deal on charges of insurance fraud.
Williams reported during his campaign that someone stole $300,000 worth of computer servers from his campaign office in Gainesville. He was charged with insurance fraud and making false statements after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined he fabricated the story.
Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh confirmed via email Williams reached a plea deal with authorities last week. Williams was sentenced to four years probation as a first offender. He also was fined $5,000 and was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service under the arrangement.
Williams represented Senate District 27 in Forsyth County during his tenure with the State Senate.
