Two dogs locked in hot cars in Hall County during heat wave

As the heat has been bordering breaking records, law enforcement officers in Hall County have made arrests in two cases where suspects have left dogs locked in hot cars.

Hall County Sheriff's Lt. Scott Ware said deputies had a call Saturday about a dog being locked in a car in a parking lot on Lake Lanier Islands Parkway. He said the car turned out to be stolen from a location in Maryland and they arrested Jihad Abdul Karim of Atlanta for animal cruelty and auto theft.

"The dog is okay and (Hall County) Animal Control took control of it," Ware said.

Also Saturday,  Loepoldo Soto, 54, was arrested after police were called to New Holland Market about a small dog being locked in his car.

"He had full knowledge of leaving the dog in the vehicle and going into a restaurant," said Gaiensville Police Cpl. Jessica Van.

Van added it is incredibly dangerous to leave a pet in a car, even on just a warm day.

"If it's 80 degrees outside, within 10 minutes it can be 99 degrees inside of a vehicle," said Van.

On Saturday local temerpatures were well into the mid 90s.

In both cases the dogs survived.
