Man rescued from Suwanee cell tower

A worker who became stranded 100 feet above ground on a cell tower in Suwanee Monday had to be rescued by the Gwinnett County Fire Department's Tactical Rescue Team (TRT).

Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the fire department said crews were call to the scene on West Price Road at 3:51 p.m.

"Crews found the worker suspended in the air near the top of the tower. The worker was ascending the tower when he experienced an injury and was unable to self-extricate," Rutledge said in a written statement.

Rutledge said two contract workers had been able to make contact with their co-worker, but they were unable to get him to the ground.

"Rope rescue technicians from the fire department’s Technical Rescue Team quickly assessed the situation and readied a TRT member to scale the tower to reach the victim," Rutledge said.

The TRT member and the contract workers were able to rig a rescue harness to safely lower the man to the ground.

Rutledge did not say what type of injury the man sustained, but he said the rescue took some time because rescuers had to stabilize the patient before they could bring him down from the tower.

Rutledge said paramedics transported the man to the hospital for further medical evaluation.
