Tennis: More than a dozen area teams qualify for state tournament

DAWSONVILLE — The North Hall boys and girl tennis both advanced to the finals of the Region 7-3A Tournament on Wednesday at the Dawson County High courts.

The Lady Trojans were the top seed and earned an automatic berth into the state tournament but got an efficient 3-0 win over host Dawson County to make the championship match. They will take on second-seeded Greater Atlanta Christian, which knocked off Lumpkin County in the other semifinal.

For the boys, North Hall beat Cherokee Bluff 3-1 in the semifinals to move into the finals. The Trojans will take on top seed GAC for the title.

The third-place matches on Thursday are slated to begin at 2 p.m. for the girls and 3:30 p.m. for the boys with the finals set to start at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.

In the boys, Cherokee Bluff earned a spot in the state tournament with a win over East Hall in the first round. Dawson County beat rival Lumpkin County to advance to the playoffs. In the girls, Dawson County beat Fannin County while Lumpkin County got past Cherokee Bluff.

In Region 8-6A action at Longwood Park, the No. 2 seed Gainesville boys advanced to the region championship match with a win over Habersham Central. Top-seeded Lanier also advanced with a win over Apalachee.

Habersham, the No. 6 seed, shocked third-seeded Dacula to advance while Apalachee took down Winder-Barrow in the first round.

Gainesville and Lanier will meet at 1 p.m. for the region title while Habersham and Apalachee will play at 10 a.m. in the third-place match.

For the girls, No. 2 seed Gainesville was upset by No. 3-seed Winder-Barrow in the semifinals. Top-seed Lanier beat No. 5 seed Dacula to advance to the finals.

The Winder girls beat Apalachee to qualify for the state tournament while Dacula beat Habersham to advance.

The Lady Red Elephants will take on Dacula at 10 a.m. at Longwood Park in the third-place match while Lanier will play Winder-Barrow at 1 p.m. in the championship match.

In Region 7-4A, both Flowery Branch teams advanced to the state tournament in a tough field but both also fell in the semifinal round to fall into the third-place match.

The Lady Falcons beat Chestatee in the first round at the Flowery Branch courts to advance but fell to No. 2 seed Blessed Trinity. They will take on Denmark at 2 p.m. at Flowery Branch in the third-place match.

The Flowery Branch boys, the defending Class 5A state champions, beat West Hall in the opening round to advance but then fell to No. 1 seed Blessed Trinity in the semifinals. The Falcons will play Marist, which lost to Denmark in the other semifinal, in the third-place match at 4 p.m. at Flowery Branch.

In Region 8-3A at Morgan County, the Jefferson girls and Jackson County girls both advanced to the finals. The Lady Dragons knocked off Franklin County while the Lady Panthers beat Hart County in the semifinals.

In the boys' tournament, Jefferson will take on host Morgan County in the finals.

The girls final is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. with the boys final to follow.
