Gainesville man suffers serious injuries in crash of log truck

By Dean Dyer, WRWH

A 51-year-old Gainesville truck driver was seriously injured when the log truck he was operating wrecked in White County Monday.

Cpl. Major Patterson with Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville said the accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Georgia Highway 254 west of Hogan Road.

Patterson said the driver, identified as Gary Smith, was traveling west approaching a curve. Smith failed to negotiate the curve and the tractor-trailer, loaded with logs, traveled off the right shoulder of the roadway into a creek, striking the embankment on the opposite side of the creek.

Patterson said the load of logs shifted forward, striking the cab. Both the cab and trailer overturned on the passenger's side. Patterson said Smith was extricated from the cab and transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with serious injuries.

According to Patterson, the driver was issued a warning for failure to maintain lane.
