FLOWERY BRANCH — The Riverside Military boys and the Gainesville girls got some record-setting performances on Friday to win the 2019 Hall County track and field championships at Cherokee Bluff High.

In the boys meet, Riverside, the defending Hall County and Class A Private state champions, piled up 193 points to outdistance second-place Gainesville to defend its title. The runner-up Red Elephants tallied 130.5 points with North Hall racking up 98.25 points for third. Flowery Branch was fourth with 80.5 points and Chestatee took fifth with 57.5 points.
Orlando Stevens and Isaac Teasley were dominating in leading the Eagles. Stevens won the 300-meter hurdles and the long jump and took second in the 100-meter hurdles. Teasley won the 400-meter run, posting a 49.65 time, which is the low time in Class A Private in 2019, and took second in the 200-meters and third in the triple jump. Both were part of the Eagles' winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Riverside coach Tim Cummings said the pair have been part of a special group the last three seasons.
"Our goal is to win what I call the Triple Crown -- the Hall County, Region 8-A, and Class A Private state title -- which we were able to do last year," Cummings said. "These guys continue to work hard and had a great day overall. This group of seniors have been together for several years and are a very close group and are just a great group to be around.
"Orlando was the high-point person in the meet and had a tremendous day. I was very proud of how they responded."
Chestatee's Christian Charles had a solid meet sweeping the 100-meter and 200-meter sprint events.
North Hall's Devan Crow swept the 800-meter and 1,600-meter races.
In the girls meet, the Lady Red Elephants posted 158 points and pulled away on the second day to hold off Flowery Branch, who had 128 points. Chestatee was third with 100.5 points, North Hall took fourth with 93.5 points, and West Hall finished fifth at 60.5 points.
While Gainesville was busy taking the team title, North Hall's Gracie McBride was putting together one of the best individual perfomances in several years. McBride won the 100-meters, the 100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles, and the triple jump events.
Chestatee's Skylar Abbot won the high jump and took second in the 300-meter hurdles.
Gainesville co-coach P.J. Davis said the girls really stepped it up after Wednesday's preliminaries. Freshman Jada Robertson and Byankha Cavazos showed the potential they possess in drivng them to the team title.
Cavazos won the 400-meters in a personal-best time (1:03.31) while Robertson scored in three events, taking fourth in the 400, fifth in the high lump, and sixth in the 200.
"We were leading after the first day but it wasn't a big lead and anything can hapen at a track meet," Davis said. "The girls responded very well in the finals. Byankha ran a great race and Jada just showed what kind of potential she has as a freshman. We're feeling a lot better about where we are as we get ready for the region meet after this one."
