Father accused in Jackson County child abduction now in jail

By B.J. Williams
A man accused in the abduction of his toddler daughter from an address in Jackson County was arrested in the Lawrenceville area Thursday night.

Gwinnett County Police Department Cpl. Michele Pihera said just before 9:30 p.m., a patrol officer noticed the suspect's van in the driveway of a home on Peninsula Trace.

The officer called his supervisor and they formulated a plan to take Robert Joseph Peeples, 39, into custody.

"The supervisor contacted other support units in the police department so we could be on the ready in case he decided to flee. We also did not know if he was armed," Pihera said.

Pihera said Peeples was sitting inside the van, and he complied with verbal commands to get out of the vehicle.

"We took him into custody without incident," she said.

A woman at the residence was not arrested; she told officers she had been trying to get Peeples to surrender to authorities.

Peeples has no arrest warrants in Gwinnett County, but he is facing charges of kidnapping and aggravated assault in Jackson County. The kidnapping charge stems from the alleged abduction of his daughter 23-month-old Baylee Sue Peeples, while the assault charge is related to his striking the child's mother with his van.

The child was turned over to a relative in Gwinnett County Thursday, about 10 hours after she was taken from a location in Jefferson. She was not harmed, according to authorities.

At last report, Peeples remained in the Gwinnett County Jail awaiting extradition to Jackson County.
