DEMOREST – The red fox that attacked a man walking his dog outside Demorest Monday afternoon has tested positive for the rabies virus.
Habersham County Animal Care and Control Director Madi Nix confirmed the lab results at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday.
The incident happened mid-afternoon on Jud Tench Road outside Demorest, and the man was able to kick it away from him when it attacked his legs, Nix said, adding the man’s dog did not come into contact with the animal.
“He went and received post-exposure shots immediately at the Habersham Emergency Room,” Nix said Tuesday.
Nix and her staff were able to locate and perform field euthanasia on the animal after a neighbor who witnessed the attack was able to get a shot at the fox.
Nix said anyone in Habersham County who sees wildlife acting strangely should call Habersham County Animal Care and Control at (706) 839-0195.
“If it’s after hours, you may definitely call 9-1-1,” Nix said.
