The U.S. Forest Service – Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, Chattooga River Ranger District, is conducting a 179-acre prescribed fire at Tallulah Gorge in Habersham County today, March 18.
That acreage is being burned in conjunction with an 820-acre burn on the South Rim of Tallulah Gorge State Park, being managed by the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
The burn will last until mid-afternoon and may result in closures of nearby roads, trails and other public areas of Tallulah Gorge State Park. For more information, call the park at (706) 754-7981.
Smoke is projected to head to the southeast of the burn unit, and it will be visible from the U.S. 441 corridor south to Toccoa and to areas of South Carolina.
The prescribed burn is being done in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division, Tallulah Gorge State Park, The Nature Conservancy, and the Georgia Forestry Commission.
