ATLANTA — Atlanta United returns to Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League action Wednesday, as it travels to face Liga MX side C.F. Monterrey at Estadio BBVA Bancomer.

On Thursday, Feb. 28, Atlanta defeated CS Herediano 4-0 (5-3 aggregate) in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League. The first leg takes place in Monterrey with the return leg set for March 13 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Trailing 3-1 after the first leg, Josef Martinez scored the fastest goal in Atlanta history after just 47 seconds, and added another goal in the second half for his 14th multi-goal game with the club. Julian Gressel scored his second goal of the tournament in the ninth minute and Leandro González Pirez headed home an Ezequiel Barco cross in the 83rd minute to make it 4-0. With two goals each, Martinez and Gressel are tied for third-top scorers in the tournament
C.F. Monterrey advanced by defeating Alianza FC (El Salvador) 1-0 on aggregate in the Round of 16. With the aggregate score level late in the second leg in Monterrey, Rayados captain Nicolás Sánchez converted a penalty in the 86th minute to send Monterrey to the quarterfinals. Monterrey has established itself as one of the top clubs in Mexico and currently sits in second place (6-0-3, 21 points) in Liga MX, and the team’s nine-match unbeaten streak is the longest current streak in the league. Rayados have won the SCCL three times (2011, 2012, 2013) and are 6-1-1 in their previous eight meetings with MLS clubs in the tournament. Forward Rogelio Funes Mori leads the team with seven goals in Liga MX Clausura play.
