Habersham charges Canon man in death of 4-month-old Pit Bull

Habersham County Animal Care and Control officers have filed felony animal cruelty charges against a Canon man after an incident resulting in the death of a Pit Bull puppy on Friday.

Officers were called to a home at 140 Dewberry Lane, Mt. Airy, at 3:59 p.m. Friday, March 1, regarding an incident of animal cruelty.

Habersham County sheriff’s deputies already were on scene.

“Animal control officers were informed that Ryan Drake Moore, 21 years old of Canon, had possibly injured a canine to the point it resulted in the death of the canine,” a statement from Habersham County Animal Care and Control Director Madi Nix reads. “Officers were able to locate an approximately 4-month-old Pit Bull-type canine deceased behind the residence. The canine was taken by animal control to a licensed veterinarian who conducted a necropsy and informed animal control officers the canine had extensive internal injuries which had resulted in its death.”

Nix obtained a warrant for Moore for felony cruelty to animals. He was booked in at the Habersham County Detention Center.

Citing the ongoing investigation, Nix on Monday declined to release further details of the case.
