Strong winds down trees, power lines in Gainesville area

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

Strong winds most of the day Sunday downed trees and power lines across Hall County but there were no reports of major incidents.

Hall County Emergency Management Agency Director Casey Ramsey said in an email late in the afternoon "There have probably been about a dozen trees across the roads or powerlines down calls handled throughout the day. At last check, it looks like there are around 500 (power) outages currently throughout the county."

One of the trees fell across power lines on Clarks Bridge Road, knocking out service in that area including power for the WDUN-AM transmitter.

The strong, gusty winds ushered in clearing skies - ending more than a week sometimes torrential rains that caused flooding and sent the level of Lake Lanier more than six feet above winter full pool. This has resulted in the closing of many parks, campgrounds and other amenities around the lake, while also affecting some businesses and homeowners on Lanier.
