The second round of the Georgia High School Association basketball playoffs was completed Thursday with four more northeast Georgia area teams advancing through to the quarterfinal round in their respective classifications.
Six area teams advanced on Wednesday making it 10 total teams -- 6 girls and 4 boys teams -- that will play in the Elite 8 round in six different classifications next Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Gainesville boys kept their run going in Class 6A knocking off Region 7-6A champion Cambridge with a thrilling 98-88 double-overtime win on the road. Rafael Rubel had career night scoring 19 of his game-high 42 points in the two overtime periods.
In Class 5A, Buford advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017 with a 64-38 victory over Villa Rica at the Buford Arena.
In Class 4A, the West Hall boys run came to an end with an 83-55 loss to Cartersville on the road. The Spartans were looking for their first quarterfinals appearance since 1994
In Class 3A, the Dawson County boys continued to show they are a title contender routing Westminster 62-40 at home. It is the first quarterfinals showing for the Tigers since 2012.
In Class A Private, the Lakeview Academy girls never trailed in taking a 58-36 rout of Darlington. The Lakeview boys, however, could not hold a first half lead in an 80-73 loss to North Cobb Christian at home.
In Class A Public, Towns County's best playoff run since 2014 came to an end in a 52-31 loss to Calhoun County after a long road trip to south Georgia.
