Wrestling: Commerce pins down 6th straight Class A crown; Jefferson, Buford streaks come to an end

By AccessWDUN Staff
MACON — Commerce was the only northeast Georgia area team to repeat as Traditional wrestling champions on Saturday holding off Darlington to win the Class A title for a sixth consecutive season.

Commerce had just two individual champions in Tucker Flint (152-pounds) and Elijah Burns (195) but had five second-place finishers to outdistance its opponents.

Buford's two-year reign in Class 5A came to an end as the Wolves finished a distant second (186.5 points) to Woodland-Cartersville (208.5), who also knocked off the Wolves for the Duals title last month. Buford had four individual champions with Nick Corday (106), Logan Ashton (113), Nick Stonecheck (138), and Blaine Bergey (160).

But the biggest shocker out of the Georgia High School Assocciation wrestling tournament, which concluded a four-day event on Saturday, came out of Class 3A. Jefferson, which had won every Traditionals title since 2001, spanning four different classifications (18 in a row), was taken down by Sonoraville, which captured its second straight Class 3A crown. The Dragons, who came in as the defending Class 4A champions, finished third with 165.5 points. Sonoraville (172.0) held off North Hall (168.5) which took second.

North Hall had three individual champions in Jacob Pedraza (113), Matthew Glenn (126), and Seth Carlton at 220. In all, the Trojans had 10 wrestlers place (top 6) with two second place finishers.

Jefferson wrestlers also captured three individual titles with Mason Mingus (106), Ryan Hurd (160), and Gavin London (285). However, the Dragons had just eight placers, including three second place finishers.

Social Circle in Class 2A won its fifth straight title while Valdosta won its first-ever state wrestling title in Class 6A. Camden County continued its domination capturing its third straight Class 7A title and fifth straight overall (two in Class 5A). Woodward Academy won its first title since 2013 in Class 4A.
