GBI releases identity of man killed by officers in Buford

By B.J. Williams

As the investigation into a Saturday afternoon shooting continues, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has released the identity of a man killed by Gwinnett County Police Department (GCPD) officers.

The GBI said Johnny Weeks, 68, was shot and killed when he brandished a weapon at police at his home on Suwanee Mill Drive in Buford.

"Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:30 p.m., the GCPD responded to a domestic incident at the above address. Officers encountered a male subject on the back porch of the residence armed with a handgun," read a press release from the GBI. "The officers attempted to negotiate with the subject to drop the weapon. During the negotiation, the subject, at some point, pointed his weapon in the direction of an officer."

GBI agents said one officer fired a weapon, striking and killing Weeks. No officers were injured.

Once the GBI finishes its investigation, agents will turn the case over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney for review.
