*Eleven inmates at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto recently received their Associate Degree in Positive Human Development and Social Change from Life University with a cumulative GPA of 3.9. The Georgia Department of Corrections and the university entered into a partnership in 2016 to offer offenders an opportunity to earn an Associate Degree.
*Accounting students at the University of North Georgia are providing free tax preparation for community members and fellow students as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program sponsored by the IRS. The returns are reviewed by a faculty member before being filed. Call 706-867-3082 for more information and to make an appointment to have a return prepared. The service will be available Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 5-March 7.
*In the closing days of his time in office, then-Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle named two northeast Georgia women, Lori Duke Jones of Clarksville and Suzanne Powell of Clermont, to the Georgia Commission on Women. The appointments, for three years, were made in December.
*The Gwinnett County Police Department is currently accepting applications for the upcoming Citizens Police Academy session. Applications must be submitted no later than Monday, March 18, 2019, and can be found on the volunteer opportunity page of the GCPD website.
