Teen injured in 'accidental misfire' in Pickens County

An accidental gunshot fired by the Pickens County Sheriff in a Jasper Walmart was thought to have hurt no one at first, but at the latest report injured a 15-year-old boy.

According to authorities, Sheriff Donnie Craig was attending the Shop with the Sheriff event at the Walmart along with several other deputies when his gun, which was holstered, "accidentally misfired" into the store floor.

Sheriff's Spokesman Captain Kris Stancil said a nearby teen caught the ricochet, and at first, told authorities he wasn't badly injured. But later reported a small cut and received treatment at the hospital.

According to a post by the Pickens County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, the incident is being looked into by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"Currently this matter is being investigated by the Pickens Sheriff’s Office and per proper protocol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been notified of the incident. The Pickens Sheriff’s Office will fully cooperate with the investigation," the post reads. "At the time of the discharge, the weapon was not being handled and the weapon was secured in the waistband. Sheriff Craig has stated how thankful he is that no one was seriously injured in the incident. All policy protocols will be followed during the investigation into the incident."
